Why traditional advertising still matters

Did radio really replace newspapers and magazines? Did video really kill the radio star? And did social media really overtake television? The truth is, newspapers, magazines, radio, and television all still exist for a reason—they tell stories. The manner in which people tell each other stories is constantly evolving and finding (or inventing) new platforms, but that doesn’t mean the old ways are entirely defunct now.

Depending on your audience and the message you’re trying to send, these mediums might be the best way to reach them. Don’t discount these just because they might seem “old-school.” You can teach an old dog new tricks—that is to say, make something extraordinary out of the ordinary!

Television Ads

Television is a great way to reach a broad audience with your message, especially paired with Connected TV (CTV). CTV helps you target specific audiences and demographics through their internet-connected TV, such as Amazon Fire, Apple TV, and others. Nearly 90% of American households own at least one internet-connected TV device, and about 73% of that audience prefers to watch free ad-supported content versus paying for ad-free content. This means that your ad can appear on channels that your ideal consumer watches most frequently, without you having to pay for commercial space!

Most of the Landmark Resort's audience is a drive market, based out of the Green Bay/Appleton areas. To increase bookings for the upcoming fall season, we ran a commercial on broadcast during primetime and Connected TV advertising our current vacation special.

Paired with the commercial, we sponsored WFRV Local 5's Fall Fun segment. Featuring our team who work and live in Door County, we provided an intimate look at why Door County, as well as the Landmark Resort, are the premier destination for a fall getaway.

Radio is a great way to raise awareness for events, promotions, or updates. The radio industry is adapting and evolving to changing times and technologies, reaching people through more than just their car stereo. You can now hear radio advertisements on streaming platforms and/or on desktop, reaching audiences wherever they may be listening.

Radio Ads

There are some modernized versions of broadcast media that still act and function like traditional media, but with better trackability and more fruitful results, such as Spotify.

To increase awareness and reach a more affluent audience, I started running ads on Spotify targeted towards people 25-55+ located in the Madison and Milwaukee areas with broad targeting to promote the Landmark Resort and its vacation packages and specials. Our campaigns consistently performed above average, with ad completion rates above 90% and with a CTR of 0.08%, exceeding the average of 0.04% for most Spotify ads.
